Hunting Season Hike

Getting cool and wintery. In the middle of rifle season (16 days total), I generally keep out of the woods, but with family visiting we did go on a short mid-day hike.

  • frosty ground and winter sun
  • highly visible

  • some lovely patches of blue sky

  • No hunting after sunset so I led a night-time hike through the woods 🙂

Jay Peak Hike

  • Overly serious start.
    Got a hike in a couple weeks ago to the summit of Jay Peak.
  • It’s pretty much nonstop elevation gain. Starts out easy enough

    .
  • Eventually turns into more of a (very fun) rock scxramble.


  • Can duck off and check out the ski runs.

  • Hilariously, if you just paint white rectangles on rocks, they magically turn into a trail!
    So there are two ways to get to the summit — you can either just walk up a ski trail almost to the top then take some stairs then a little scramble…
    OR you can do the correct thing and scramble over a bunch of rocks all the way to the top.



  • Heading straight up.


  • Just shy of 4000 feet.

Lunar Photography

Attempted some photos of the waxing crescent moon the other night. This seems like it should be another flavour of ”night sky” photography but it’s kind of the opposite. The moon is pretty bright. So instead of a wide lens with very high ISO and long exposures, 200mm zoom, low iso, and very short exposures. I found it hard to get focus right (I really need new eyes) but was pretty happy they turned out at all.








  • when I deliberately overexposed with a long exposure, I got the whole of the moon, along with a few stars, which was pretty cool!
